DIY Musical Instruments - Meet Nicolas Bras

I know at some point, I was researching some DIY musical instruments. I think I was considering making something with PVC pipes a la Blue Man Group. At some point I got suggested videos by Nicolas Bras. Check this out:

Nicolas just passed 100k subscribers to his channel. His stuff is so wacky and weird and I love each one. He demonstrates in each video a concept, shows how he designs and builds it, then plays an original composition. Sometimes he takes it one step further, adding on other pieces and making a composite instrument.

Given time, the one I want to make the most is the Aquatic Harp inspired by an Indian ektara. See this:

I don't know why I want one. I don't know what I would use it for. I don't know where I would use it. But I still want one.

Oh, and here's the fun PVC pipe instrument.

A new audio app claims to treat tinnitus

Tinnitus affects the ears but it originates in the brain. The condition, which causes ringing in the ears, is mainly triggered by age-related hearing loss and prolonged exposure to excessively loud noise. But neuroscientific studies reveal that tinnitus is a symptom of abnormal hyperactivity in the brain's auditory cortex. While most people affected by it resign themselves to chronic pain, Tinnitracks, a new web-based app, claims to treat the cause of the problem through filtered audio therapy. The premise of the app, from German startup Sonormed, is neuroplasticity, or the brain's ability to adapt and constantly learn new things. The app analyzes individual tracks and filters the frequency that causes tinnitus for each user. On playback, the listener's hearing adapts to the audible alteration (or notches) and over time the hyperactivity in the brain is toned down. World War I Sheet Music

The World War I digital sheet music collection is drawn from the Sheet Music Collection at the John Hay Library. It is composed of over 1,800 titles that relate in some way to the events of World War I, and the impact of that war on American society. There are patriotic songs, songs relating to specific military units, romantic songs of love and loss, comic songs, and songs that look to the war’s end. Cover art on the songs is particularly striking. The most famous is perhaps Norman Rockwell’s cover for George M. Cohan’s "Over There". The famed sheet music illustrator Barbelle provided many covers, including the amusing "How ‘Ya Gonna Keep ‘Em Down on the Farm (After They’ve Seen Paree?)". The cover of Richard Whiting’s eternally popular "Till We Meet Again", with its melancholy blue tones, perfectly complements the wistful quality of the music and lyric. ReMix: Chrono Trigger 'Cosmic Whispers' - OverClocked ReMix

Our 15th and final flood mix comes from DrumUltimA, who sends us a jazzy solo vibraphone arrangement from a little game called Chrono Trigger, for the SNES. Perhaps you've heard of it. Massive List of "Stairway to Heaven" Covers

I thought I'd linked this one a long time ago, but I went looking for it today and realized it wasn't here. Love them or hate them, here is the largest collection of cover versions of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. My favorite? Frank Zappa's band does their rendition during a live show replete with a killer horn section. They do the entire guitar solo note-for-note... ON THE HORNS! That tickles me just the right way. Enjoy.

Youngblood Brass Band - Nuclear Summer

Wow. Just, ... wow. I've never heard of these guys before, but they are like the perfect blend of horns and high energy that I'd put together if I could custom create a band. It's exotic and modern and mean. You've got some jazz and bebop sounds --check! You've got a little Latin --check! You've got some vocals and they start smooth --check!! But by the end of this performance he's spittin' like a fire hose on fire --double check!!

The Trombone player starts it off with a simple riff. But each horn in turn gets their spotlight. The Tuba even gets a simple bass riff that should make any bass guitar player quit his night job. Why hasn't anyone got me their CD yet?! It's jazz you can slam dance to.

Derek's Spring Break Singalong Playlist

My friend Derek posted a list of songs on his blog that he wanted to share. Since some of my coworkers and I had been posting our own playable play lists at Top 5 Friday using Playlist.com, I thought I'd take a few minutes and create an embeddable version for Derek.

Derek described the theme as follows:

Most of them are either from soundtracks of movies/tv shows I’ve seen recently or have something to do with the theme of movies/tv, with a few exceptions.

I could find every song that Derek listed except for #5 (30th Century Man by Jigsaw Seen), #8 (Rocket Ship by Kathy McCarty) and #16 (Fearless Leader by Soul Asylum). Anyone who'd like to do so should be able to copy and paste this to their own website or blog using this code:
