John Williams is 90 Years Old

Well this came as a shock when I saw this post today. But I guess it's true.

John Williams conducted the National Symphony Orchestra in a memorable performance of his "Imperial March" from Star Wars during a gala to celebrate his 90th Birthday in 2023.

It makes me think of the future and the artists we will eventually lose. What an important contribution he made to the world. What a legend.

Oh Holy Night: A Heartwarming Christmas Celebration

TikTok user @realityshowreject (L. Rodgers) posted a great ~2 minute video talking about the Christmas hymn Oh Holy Night and how it is an abolitionist Christmas song. She explains more and also sings a beautiful rendition of one verse and chorus.

@realityshowreject Merry Christmas Y’all #fyp #christmas #oholynight ♬ original sound - L. Rodgers

You can read the full lyrics of this song, in a version by CeCe Winans here:

At our house every Christmas, our favorite rendition that must be played on high volume is this one by Josh Groban.

However you celebrate...

Merry Christas and Happy New Year!

Music-Map.com - Find Similar Music

Let me quickly tell you about a new website I learned about called Music-Map. You can type in the name of an artist and get a variety of similar artists in a simple, visual relationship cloud. The closer the two names are, the greater the probability people will like both artists.

Let's try a few examples, just off the top of my head:

Most of the major streaming services, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music, YouTube Music and so on, all have built-in recommendation engines. You listen to one song or one artist or play a playlist of your favorites, they have an additional 10 songs for you to add. As a manual music recommendation engine, Gnod's Music-Map is pretty interesting because it shows you visually the relationship between different bands and artists, allowing you click from one to the next through degrees of separation. It's more interactive and purposeful and it fulfills a research role as well. The major streaming providers could learn a thing or two here and incorporate something similar into their paid services. But regardless, check out Music-Map.com.

Play Guitar in FFFFFF Tuning

There are a lot of alternative tunings for guitar. And perhaps traditionalists don't care for them much, but here's an idea where all six strings are keyed to F.

Check out Ichika Nito's channel for more.

EI by Nelly | St. Louis Media Business & Entertainment Management Diploma

The path aspiring recording engineers once commonly traveled, from intern to apprentice to accomplished engineer, afforded ample education in the nuances of the trade. But today, with advanced recording software widely available, individuals can begin producing without any foundation in the core principles of production, much less the subtle complexities of sound engineering. While this increased accessibility of recording technology has represented a remarkable leap forward for recorded music and music enthusiasts, with its introduction, the art of recording arguably has suffered.

JJ Abrams Just Ethered Every Other Fan Event with a Free Star Wars Concert

“We do it for the fans” is practically a cliche at Comic-Con. It’s just what you’re supposed to say to people who slept outside to hear you give non-committal answers about your new movie or TV show. Tonight, JJ Abrams said it like he meant it. Then he backed it up by inviting 6,500 people to follow him out of Hall H to see a free concert of music from the Star Wars scores performed by the San Diego Symphony.

John Williams on Star Wars: The Force Awakens | Vanity Fair

Film composer John Williams has been nominated for an astonishing 49 Academy Awards. He’s won five. His second was for Jaws and his third was for the original Star Wars—and bingo! Right there you have arguably the two most recognizable scores in Hollywood history. Williams has since written the music for all the Star Wars sequels and prequels, along with nearly all of Steven Spielberg’s films, the first three Harry Potter pictures, and—a few more titles chosen not quite at random—Superman, The Witches of Eastwick, Home Alone, JFK, and The Book Thief.
